Summary

Electron-microscopic evidence of morphological signs of foreign body reactions can be seen in the first 27 days after tattooing. The chemical additives of china ink are eliminated in the acute leukocyte phase and the following histiocytic-macrophagic phase. The macrophagic cells move together and gradually confluence to form giant cells within 14 days.
