Zusammenfassung
-
1.
Summary
-
1.
75 out of 96 Chlorella strains from the culture collections at Göttingen, Cambridge, Bloomington/Indiana, and Bethesda/Maryland were found to be autotrophic, whereas 21 strains (cf. Table 1) are heterotrophic.
-
2.
The 75 autotrophic Chlorella strains studied are assigned to 8 different species which can be recognized by physiological and biochemical criteria (hydrogenase activity, formation of the secondary carotenoids astaxanthin and canthaxanthin under nitrogen-deficient conditions, and acid tolerance) and by the size and shape of their cells (cf. Tables 3 and 4).
-
3.
In view of the pronounced biochemical differences found between the different species of the genus Chlorella, the correct identification of strains used for scientific and industrial purposes seems to be highly desirable. In addition, it is now possible to select for research or for future technical use strains of those species having biochemical properties most suitable for any specific purpose.
