Summary

  1. 1.

The morphology, asexual and sexual reproduction, and zygospore germination of the green flagellate Furcilla stigmatophora is described from naturally occurring and cultured material.

  2. 2.

Combinations of nine clones were cultured and examined for evidence of mating and zygospore production. There appear to be two mating types.

  3. 3.

The effects of dry heat and other factors on zygospore germination were tested.

  4. 4.

Negative phototaxis, positive chemotaxis and positive reaction to higher oxygen concentration were established, while geotaxis was not observed.

  5. 5.

Growth under various anaerobic and aerobic, light and dark conditions was compared.

  6. 6.

No evidence of holozoic nutrition was found.
