Zusammenfassung
-
1.
Summary
-
1.
22 strains of Ankistrodesmus (A. ammalloides, braunii, densus, falcatus, nannoselene, stipitatus) are all autotrophic and synthesize secondary carotenoids (astaxanthin and traces of canthaxanthin) under nitrogen-deficient conditions. With one exception (A. stipitatus), all strains contain hydrogenase and are able to liquefy gelatin.

2.
27 strains of Scenedesmus (S. acuminatus, acutiformis, basiliensis, bijugatus, dimorphus, dispar, longus, naegelii, obliquus, quadricauda) are all autotrophic, contain hydrogenase, are able to liquefy gelatin, and synthesize secondary carotenoids (astaxanthin and canthaxanthin, many strains also echinenone) under nitrogen-deficient conditions.

3.
Whereas the species of the genus Chlorella combine only slight morphological differences with a rather considerable biochemical diversity, the members of the genera Ankistrodesmus and Scenedesmus are characterized by a higher degree of morphological differentiation contrasting with a remarkable uniformity in the biochemical characters studied thus far.
