Some manifestations of energy storage in algae and chloroplasts

Summary

Dark-adapted plants must be “activated” by a flash of light before they can evolve oxygen in response to a subsequent flash. The chemiluminescence of chloroplasts, evoked by a change of pH or of oxidation potential, also requires prior illumination. Delayed fluorescence and thermoluminescence are by definition dependent on prior illumination.

An attempt is made to explain these well known phenomena on a common basis. The resulting model accommodates many characteristics of the phenomena and suggests some new experiments.
