Summary
The literature on placental septa is briefly reviewed. From the examination of extensive material it is concluded that septa are in fact present from the 80 mm stage until full term. Notwithstanding recent statements (based on sex chromatin distribution) indicating that the septa are of maternal origin and many descriptions in the literature alleging a purely foetal origin for them, our material suggests strongly that both maternal and foetal cellular elements can be found in them.
The septa are, however, much more attenuated and irregular in arrangement than is generally recognized; they cannot, therefore, constitute really effective partitions between the placental lobes. Hence it is concluded that the septa are unlikely to play a significant role in the circulation of the maternal blood in the intervillous space.
