Summary
The silica content of Cyclotella cryptica increases by about 50% after the cells have been darkened for 12 hours. This effect is mainly a direct consequence of the change from light to dark, and, for the minor part, also due to cell divisions still occurring in the dark. Experimental proof is given for the fact that the surplus of silica is of general physiological importance. It enables the predarkened cells (compared with cells from continuously illuminated cultures) to produce dry weight, protein, chlorophyll and DNA longer and more efficiently in a silica-free medium in light. The stored silica is considered a reserve whose function exceeds the role of silicate as a precursor for the external skeleton.
