Summary
In a group of 7 epileptic patients the α-index and the pathological activity were analyzed in eyes open conditions at rest and during the performance of different tasks. The number of groups of pathological paroxysmal activity in both hemispheres, the amount of pathological waveforms within the group and the focal pathological alterations were counted for periods of 10 seconds. The α-activity was evaluated by means of an interval-analyzer and the number of α-waves were counted during the same sampling periods.
The following results are presented:
-
1.
During the performance of all tasks there is a general inhibition of the paroxysmal pathological activity. This inhibition runs parallel with the decrease of α-index.
-
2.
The blocking rate of α-activity as well as of the paroxysmal pathological activity is different for different tasks. This can be proved by covariance analysis.
-
3.
By ranking the α-blocking rate for the different tasks in linear order of increase a significant correlation with the paroxysmal activity can be shown. Mental arithmetic (smallest decrease) and complicated visual-motor coordination tasks (highest blocking rate) were at the opposite sides of the rank scale.
-
4.
The group-statistical analysis shows an unsystematic change of the focal alterations during the performance of the tasks.
