Summary
Racemic amphetamine has been administered to 18 male students, 22 to 25 years old; the drug was given twice, first for a period of one week (2×5 mg), then as a single dose (20 mg) prior their submission to various psychological tests.
The drug, which could not be identified by the subjects, induced in both instances as many subjective effects of depression as of excitation. At the same time, when the students were submitted to certain Bonnardel tests of perception and mental speed a learning facilitation was demonstrated. Results obtained with other tests (general intelligence, memory) were not modified by amphetamine, when compared to those of 21 controls.
The depressive reactions following the absorption of amphetamine could be reproduced more regularly in the same subjects than was the case for the reactions of excitation. Those subjects are characterized by high scores in the D scale (depression) and Pt scale (psychasthenia) of the MMPI. The clinical importance of these findings is discussed in connection with results reported by other authors.
