Abstract

Oestrous behaviour was activated by oestradiol/progesterone treatment in ovariectomized hamsters. The effects of increased and decreased nervous monoamine levels, achieved by neuropharmacological agents were studied.

Amine depletors reserpine (1–3 mg/kg) and tetrabenazine (40–100 mg/kg) did not reduce the oestrous behaviour while an inhibitory effect was obtained by the monoamine oxidase inhibitor pargyline (150 mg/kg) and nialamide (200 mg/kg). When DOPA or 5-HTP was combined with pargyline the inhibitory effect was enhanced. This was most evident after 5-HTP administration.

The results give evidence of monoamine dependent nervous pathways mediating inhibition of oestrous behaviour in the female hamster.
