The fine morphology of the area of foetal- maternal apposition in the equine placenta

Summary

The area of foetal-maternal apposition in the cotyledonary part of the equine placenta has been studied with the electron microscope. An even zone of mutually interdigitating, spatially separated microvilli was present between the cryptal epithelium and the trophoblast. The foetal microvilli were more numerous than the maternal ones. Evidence of pinocytotic activity was observed in the trophoblastic cells. A main transport direction from maternal to foetal cells was postulated.
