Summary
In the epithelial cells of the ejaculatory duct of sexually mature Locusta migratoria and other species of Caelifers, a special type of cytoplasm is observed, consisting almost entirely of microtubules and for which we propose the term “solenoplasm”. The solenoplasm can represent as much as 70% of the total cytoplasmic volume. It can contain glycogen. It appears under two different morphological aspects: the “loose” solenoplasm contains relatively dispersed microtubules, whereas the “dense” solenoplasm contains bundles of microtubules.
These bundles are parallel to the cellular axis and continue along the full lenght of the cell. The microtubules forming the bundles are more numerous at the centre and at the apex of the cell than at the base. They are inserted into the plasmatic membrane by an “anchor” device which is situated between the microvilli, at the cellular apex.
According to the histochemical results obtained, the dense solenoplasm is rich in proteins. The microtubules (diameter appr. 250 Å) have a wall formed by sub-units which are themselves tubular structures. They may contain an axial structure. Some appear to be “empty”, some “full”.
The solenoplasm may play a role in the water-absorbing mechanism and in the dehydratation of secretions constituting the insect's seminal fluid. But the part taken by the microtubules in this transit of water has yet to be demonstrated.
