Summary
Evoked-response audiometry (ERA) was employed in 30 neonates. The response pattern was far from uniform. Gestatory age and the maturization of the CNS appear to play a major role. The large variations reported in the literature may, at least partly, be explained by the differences in recording techniques, parameters explored, etc. Thus, for the time being, each laboratory engaged in evoked-response audiometry on neonates must determine its own normative values and their variations. ERA is a reliable diagnostic method, provided that its variations are known and are then taken into account in the evaluation of results. Conducting the tests during periods of natural sleep and the use of moderate signal intensities usually render good results.
