Abstract

The effects of starvation on the levels of protein, carbohydrates and lipids of three principal reserve compartments-the gonads, digestive tract, and test-have been studied in the resting stage of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. Variations of these levels were observed during 1 month's starvation. Analysis of covariance revealed the following significant changes: (a) a decrease in carbohydrates of the test and digestive tract; (b) a decrease in lipids of the test and gonads; (c) an increase in proteins of the gonads. A decrease in the carbohydrates and lipids of the test during the first week of starvation emphasizes the importance of the test as a storage organ.
