Summary
The authors report their experience with 100 vertebral arteriograms using a new contrast medium (‘Vasombrix 32’) whose lack of toxic effect on cerebral capillaries has been demonstrated in animals, which has an iodine content (32%) above that of other contrast media, whilst its viscosity is equal to that of the blood. — Clinically the examinations were remarkably well tolerated, no neurological side effects, however minor or transitory, were observed. There was virtually no effect on pulse rate or blood pressure. The quality of radiological films was superior to those obtained using current, commercially available substances. This was especially true of capillary and venous phase films. Thus it is possible to visualize on a single film all the veins of the different groups described by various workers. — The authors feel confident that the association of perfect tolerance with a net improvement in picture quality will lead to progress in radiological knowledge of the posterior fossa vasculature, in normal and pathological states.
