Summary
In recent papers (Downs 1964, Downs et al. 1965) it has been concluded on the basis of experiments with isolated slices of apple skin that the photosynthetic system might be contributing to light dependent anthocyanin synthesis. — Because light induced anthocyanin synthesis is important for a general theory of photomorphogenesis (cf. Vince 1964, Mohr 1964) we have checked if these conclusions — based on experiments with apple skin — also apply to light induced anthocyanin synthesis of seedlings (e.g. Sinapis alba L.).
The results of our present experiments comparing anthocyanin synthesis and photosynthetic capacity of mustard seedlings clearly exclude all possibilities that the photosynthetic apparatus might be involved in light dependent anthocyanin synthesis of mustard seedlings. It is rather probable that the light influence on anthocyanin formation — at least in the long wave lengths range of the visible spectrum — is exclusively due to the formation of active phytochrome 730 (Hartmann 1965, Mohr, Wagner and Hartmann 1965) which leads to differential gene activation (Mohr 1965, Mohr and Lange 1965).
