Die Zellen der Epidermis aller Schichten sind durch Vorsprünge und Eindellungen der Zellmembran miteinander verzahnt. Diese Verzahnung wird in in den oberen Lagen des Stratum granulosum tiefer.

Im Oberflächenrelief der Zellen nehmen die Desmosome charakteristische Orte ein.

Die Zellmembranen hängen in bestimmten Arealen, den Bizzozeroschen Knötchen (Desmosome), inniger zusammen. Im Bereich der Desmosome ist der Zellularspalt von besonderer Kittsubstanz erfüllt.

Tonofilamente, Einzelfäden, die eine Dicke von etwa 80 Å besitzen, sind in Strähnen verschiedener Dicke, den Tonofibrillen, zusammengefaßt.

Die Tonofilamentsträhnen setzen an den Bizzozeroschen Knötchen (Desmosome) an.

Im Stratum corneum weist die Kittsubstanz der Desmosome eine komplizierte Schichtung auf. Hier sind die Zellen an ihrer ganzen Oberfläche durch eine interzellulare Substanz von durchschnittlich 100 Å E Dicke getrennt.

Die Keratohyalinbildung geht allmählich vor sich. Das Keratohyalin bedeckt die fibrillären Elemente der Rattenepidermis nie vollständig.

Zellkerne und Zellorganelle — Mitochondrien, Golgisubstanz und Paladeschen Körnchen — bleiben bis zum Stratum corneum erhalten. Beim Sprung in die Verhornung verschwinden alle diese Elemente plötzlich. In der Zelle bleibt nur eine fibrillierte Masse übrig, die den Zelleib vollständig füllt.
