Late-formed metaphloem sieve-elements in Zea mays L.

Summary

Late-formed metaphloem sieve-elements in the vascular bundles of the leaf and pedicels of Zea differ from the typical sieve elements by having thicker cell walls and larger, elongate plastids. The plastids contain a quasi-crystalline structure which is different from that observed in the spherical plastids of sieve elements of other monocotyledons.
