Abstract

General expressions for fully developed temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers are obtained for heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluid flow between parallel plates and through circular pipes subjected to a uniform wall heat flux. The effect of viscous dissipation is taken into account since it may often be significant in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids. Asymptotic Nusselt numbers for three widely used models, i.e. the power law fluid, the Bingham plastic, and the Ellis fluid are obtained as specific results.
