Summary
The interpretation of quantity equations is discussed along the lines indicated by A. Lodge in 1888. From this point of view products of integral powers (+ and −) of quantities have no meaning by themselves, but a certain meaning can be ascribed to them by convention, letting room for more then one interpretation.
Special attention is given to the problem of rationalization and to that of an extension of the number of basic quantities, by means of a simple example.
