Summary
The effects of chrysotile B and crocidolite as well as of quartz-asbestos dust mixtures were studied in intraperitoneal tests with rats lasting up to 6 months. An assessment was made based on organ weight detenninations and pathological examinations.
The following results were obtained: The weight of lung lymph nodes, of cranial mesenteric lymph nodes, and most of all the total lymph node weight obtained by addition of both values show an unequivocal correlation to dust injections. Crocidolite provokes a considerable greater quantitative reaction than chrysotile. If mixed with quartz chrysotile has an inhibitory effect, whereas for crocidolite almost an addition of the effects of quartz- and asbestos components can be observed.
After an injection of chrysotile and crocidolite the modifications in the omentum are rather scarce; they do not occur in other organs. Crocidolite however, causes extensive adhesions of omentum, liver, lien and diaphragm. Both asbestos dusts are to be classified as fibrogenic; a progression of modifications does not take place. Ferruginous bodies were only found after a test period of 6 months in the group with the highest crocidolite dose. As particular pathological modifications in all crocidolite groups ascites and ovarian cysts were observed. There were no indications as to the pathogenesis of these modifications.
