Vortex shedding beneath the free-surface

Abstract

Vortex shedding from a floating rectangular body, advancing at steady speed, is studied. Some nonlinear features of its interaction with the free-surface motion are elucidated by flow visualization. For numerical simulation, a finite-difference approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations is used. A third-order accurate differencing scheme is employed for the convective terms and a subgrid-scale turbulence model is introduced. The simulated results show good resemblance to the visualized vortex shedding. The detailed comparison, of the distributions of pressure and turbulent kinetic energy, is made between experiment and simulation; and the points concerning which further improvements are necessary are made clear.
