The ultrastructure and the histochemical ferment behaviour of the interstitial cells in the inner medullary zone and in the papilla of the rat kidney are described. The interstitial cells are arranged like rungs of a ladder, crossing the medullary tubuli and capillaries at right angles. The stellate branched cell body comes in contact with the basal membrane of the tubuli and the capillaries by means of podocytes. The cells are partly surrounded by basal membrane-like substance. They show a markedly developed Golgi-complex and often contain small fat droplets. Mitochondria and endoplasmatic reticulum are poorly developed. The ferment activity of the interstitial cells is slight. The functional meaning of these remarkable cells in the medullary interstitium, to which little attention has been given in the past is discussed.

Zusammenfassung

Die Ultrastruktur und das ferment-histochemische Verhalten der interstitiellen Zellen in der inneren Markzone und in der Papille der Rattenniere werden beschrieben. Die Zwischenzellen sind wie die Sprossen einer Leiter quer zur Verlaufsrichtung der Markkanälchen und der Blutkapillaren angeordnet. Der sternförmig verzweigte Zelleib tritt durch Ausläufer mit den Basalmembranen der Tubuli und der Kapillaren in Kontakt. Die Zellen werden teilweise von basalmembranartiger Substanz umgeben. Sie zeigen einen stark entwickelten Golgi-Komplex und enthalten häufig kleine Fetttropfen. Mitochondrien und endoplasmatisches Reticulum sind spärlich ausgebildet. Die Fermentaktivität der Zwischenzellen ist gering. Die funktionelle Bedeutung dieser eigenartigen bisher wenig beachteten Zellen des Markinterstitiums wird diskutiert.
