Summary

The behaviour of the resistance to flow and of the blood volume of the isolated canine lung lobe perfused with arterial blood from a donor dog has been investigated in 12 experiments.

1. At a constant degree of inflation, the resistance to flow and the blood volume of the lung lobe were found to be dependent on the transmural pressure (=intraluminal pressure — alveolar pressure). An elevation of the transmural pressure by various procedures (e. g.: elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure, of the pulmonary venous pressure, of the static intraluminal pressure, lowering of the alveolar pressure) caused a decrease in the resistance to flow and an increase in the blood volume, and vice versa.

2. If the transmural pressure was held constant, variations in the degree of inflation of the lung lobe (by reduction of the external pressure) were observed to affect the resistance to flow and the blood volume. Inflation of the collapsed lung was accompanied by a decrease in the resistance to flow and by an increase in the blood volume. Inflating the lung lobe to higher degrees of distension was found to increase both the resistance to flow and the blood volume.
