Summary
In cats lightly anesthetized with chloralose-urethan, the ventral aspect of the medulla oblongata was exposed with a thermode a circular area of 2 mm2 could be cooled down to 8–5°C within 30 sec. The distribution of the temperature on the surface and within the tissue during cooling was examined by means of a thermoprobe. The effects on respiration and circulation were observed.
1. Reproducible effects were found in an area of 9 mm2 located rostromedially to the root of the 12th cranial nerve. Within this area there was a point of maximal sensitivity.
2. Cooling at this particular point regularly produced a fall in blood pressure which was enhanced after section of the vagi and sinus nerves and by coagulation of the thermosensitive point on the opposite side.
3. The pulse rate showed no regular alterations upon cold blockade.
4. The respiratory rate was but slightly changed by cold blockade. The alterations were not unequivocal.
5. Cooling regularly resulted in a decrease in tidal volume by 27 to 53%. After denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors the effect was more pronounced. If in addition the thermosensitive point on the contralateral side was coagulated, there was respiratory arrest in 7 out of 10 cases, which proved reversible after re-warming.
6. In hyperthermia, no apnoe could be elicited.
7. Even during CO2 breathing, cold blockade produced respiratory depression.
8. Since no respiratory effort was observed after elimination of peripheral chemoreceptors, coagulation of the contralateral thermosensitive point, and cooling of the ipsilateral thermosensitive field, it is concluded that there are no further central respiratory drive or automatic generation of impulses of an appreciable magnitude to maintain regular respiratory activity.
