Summary
The relationship between changes in total blood volume and changes in atrial circumference as well as atrial pressures was studied on anesthetized cats under spontaneous breathing conditions. The following results were obtained:
-
1.
The circumference and the pressures of the atria changed in the same direction with change in total blood volume.
-
2.
The circumference, the atrial pressures, and the change in total blood volume, were found to bear a linear relationship to each other.
-
3.
The time constant of the transient response was on the average 3 minutes.
-
4.
A change in right atrial pressure of 1 cm of water caused an average change of 120–150 μ in atrial circumference (total circumference between 6–8 cm).
-
5.
The circumference-pressure-curve is linear but it seems that the slope decreases in the large volume range and increases in the low volume range.
The data suggest that the atrial circumference behaves passively with moderate changes in total blood volume.
