Gibt es eine Doppelinnervation im menschlichen Muskel?

Mechanographische Untersuchungen am Hypothenar

Summary

By using a special technique of double stimulations, it is possible to obtain an exact functional subdivision within the peripheral motor neuron into separate conducting fiber bundles. The ulnar nerve was chosen for this investigation because of the great length the nerve offers for study. The mechanical effect of the hypothenar was recorded. The following results were obtained:

  1. 1.

If the two bundles of nerve fibers were stimulated one after another at an interval of 15 msec, then the sum of the mechanical response clearly exceeded the response obtained by simultaneous stimulation of all the nerve fibers.

  2. 2.

The effect was no longer manifest as soon as the the time interval of the stimuli dropped below the refractory time of the peripheral synapse (2 msec).

These results can only be explained if it is assumed that in the first instance part of the muscle fibers can be activated through two or more motor neurons. This is, moreover, an appreciable part and amounts to about 30% of the entire muscle mass. Double innervation of the motor end plates to such an extent certainly does not exist anatomically. We are, therefore, discussing the possibility of “axone reflexes” in the terminal areas of the motor neurons.
