In 230 neurologically healthy children from 0–14 years the photically evoked potential (ep) in different cortical areas was recorded with a CAT 400 computer. Its development in the occipital area is shown in Fig. 2. Within each age group a certain interindividual variability can be observed which, however, can be reduced to the distinction of three different types (see Fig.2A-C). These types cannot yet be related to other developmental criteria and their individual persistance throughout different ages has not yet been ascertained. Besides the decrease in latency (Fig.3) all components of the ep show an increasing differentiation especially during the first 3 months. From the 4th month on, a splitting of the first negative potential is seen so that a 1. and 3. wave (after Cigánek) can be distinguished. From the 2.–3. year on some individuals begin to show a 5th wave arising from the late positivity. The 7th wave has the same period as the spontaneous rhythmical EEG-waves in the different ages (Fig.6) and is thus considered to be the first wave of the “afterdischarge”.-During the first months the maximal amplitude of the occipital ep moves from the inion towards the occipital area. In the parietal area a prominent wave is seen as a long latency negativity from the 2. year on, whereas in the central areas a late negative wave is consistantly seen but from the 6th year on.

It is tried to interpret the development of the ep in the light of present knowledge on the maturation of the brain. Only during the first 1–2 months retinal factors seem to be of major significance, whereas lateron the maturation of central visual pathways seems more important. The broad potentials in newborns are taken as an indication for prolonged postsynaptic potentials in the immature cortex. The main steps in the development of the ep at 3 months and after 5 years correspond well to simultaneous steps in the development of EEG and infantile behaviour.
