Additional information

An earlier version of this paper, extracted from a booklength manuscript, Emotions and Reasons (unpublished), was read at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Symposium in Philosophy, in March 1985. Work on the manuscript was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by the University of Maryland Division of Arts and Humanities, during 1983–1984. I owe thanks to members of the Greensboro audience, and particularly to Harvey Green, for comments.
