Summary
Variations in number, size, form, and localization of endothelial vesicles and intercellular contacts are described in different organs. The number of vesicles per volume being often correlated to the thickness of endothelium may vary even in different parts of the same capillary. The form of vesicles and their tendency to fuse correspond to the density of cytoplasmic matrix. The length of intercellular contact zones mostly changes with the length of an open intercellular space, which can show invaginations of the adjacent cell membranes. During the fusion process the cytoplasmic lamellae of the membranes are seen to fuse at the touch point of vesicle and cell membrane. This is suggested to be an intermediate stadium of the fusion process. So vesiculation may be help to change the endothelial surface and the diameter of capillaries. If only one of the two surfaces is enlarged microvilli or irregular processes are formed. Calculations were made on the extent of changes in surface, volume, and thickness of the capillary wall in relation ro the number of vesicles fusing. Factors which may induce vesiculation and the meaning of vesiculation in transport and in changes of surface are discussed.
