Summary
Ependyma and ependymal organs in the diencephalon of Neoceratodus forsteri, as well as 5 Urodelan and 4 Anuran species have been studied by light and electron microscopy.
-
1.
The topographical relations in the region of the recessus infundibuli of Neoceratodus forsteri are very similar to those found in fishes possessing a saccus vasculosus, but the special differentiations of a typical saccus are not developed: there are no coronet cells and the whole dorsal and dorsolateral wall of the region contains secretory fibres of the preopticoneurohypophysial system. The subcommissural organ of Neoceratodus is similar to that of Anurans. In the caudal part of the organ there are hypendymal strands of polar or bipolar cells containing stainable material, with some of the cells ending at capillaries. Typical stellate cells with rather big nuclei under the subcommissural epithelium could not be determined with certainty. The epiphysial epithelium of Neoceratodus is lined by ependymal cells and photoreceptors.

2.
In the subcommissural organ of Bombina variegata the release of secretory material was studied. The electron dense content of apically accumulated grana has been observed to be released into the cerebrospinal fluid. Differences in the density of the material in the sacs formed by the endoplasmic reticulum can be related to differences in the activity of single cells. They could correspond to differences in size and staining properties of circumnuclear aggregations of stainable material, which can be observed in light microscopical preparations. Besides, new data are referred concerning the problem of basal secretion release. Nonmyelinated fibres containing membrane bound granules were observed not only between the basal processes of subcommissural cells but also in the apical region. An innervation of the region by fibres of this type is probable since there are structural complexes which can be regarded to be synapses.
-
3.
In the region of the ampulla caudalis of Urodela there are no special structural differentiations which could be involved in mobilization of the secretory material of the massa caudalis. The region was studied in newts before and after metamorphosis, thus being able to observe the structural changes occurring during this period. These can be regarded as a model for substance storage and mobilization. The stainable material of Reissner's fibre is regarded to be mainly carrier substance. Microvilli of ependymal cells of the spinal cord touch Reissner's fibre; in some cases they were observed to penetrate the fibre.
-
4.
The content of stainable material in the subcommissural organ could be increased by keeping the animals in permanent darkness (Hydromantes, Triturus) or by exstirpation of the eyes (Triturus). Osmotic stress (by keeping the animals in saline solutions and/or by injecting such solutions) was tested in Bombina and Hydromantes. Only in the last species a reaction (accumulation of secretory material) was stated.
-
5.
In the ependyma lining the 3rd ventricle regions of progressive differentiation can be distinguished by a high activity of acid phosphatase and by a high content of Mitochondria, Golgi-sacs, membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes and related bodies. Also in cells which do not belong to ependymal organs as well as in the ependyma of the spinal cord in the tail of Urodela there is evidence for secretion formation and release into the cerebrospinal fluid. In the 3rd ventricle of Triturus non-myelinated fibres are demonstrated.

The pulvinar corporis pinealis of Bombina variegata contains a neuropil to which a secretory function can be ascribed. Typical for the region is a felt of irregularly running fibres containing membrane bound granula (diameter 720–1450 μ with a dense core. These fibres end at the outer limiting membrane of the brain in clefts between the end-feed of the ependymal cells of the region. The endings are characterized by vesicles ranging in the same size as synaptic vesicles. As the granules did not react to the staining methods so far tested it was not possible to trace the fibres to their origin. On the other hand one can calculate the total surface area of the endings. The whole region has a surface of about 37500 μ2 of which approximately 12% are occupied by endings the number of which ranges about 1700. Structural and functional acpects of the system decribed here for the first time are discussed.
