The evaluation of the superior ophthalmic vein on the carotid angiogram

Summary

In 504 carotid angiograms investigated by subtraction technique observation of the superior ophthalmic vein is of clinical value. It was shown that in normal cases this vein can only rarely be demonstrated. In pathological cases however (i.e. brain tumours, cerebral bleedings, vascular deseases, sinus thrombosis etc.), the superior ophthalmic vein shows up in the angiograms with a varying frequency. The time at which in the angiographic procedure the vein can be seen for the first time, and the direction in which the vein is perfused is important for the clinical evaluation. The results of the study are discussed.

Résumé

La veine ophtalmique supérieure a été recherchée sur 504 angiogrammes carotidiens. Dans les cas normaux la veine est rarement visualisée. Dans les cas de tumeur cérébrale d'hémorragie cérébrale, d'angiopathies, de thrombose des sinus... etc. la veine apparît avec une fréquence variable. L'auteur insiste sur l'importance qu'il faut attribuer au moment de l'opacification et au sens du fleuve dans la veine.

Zusammenfassung

An 504 subtrahierten Carotisangiographieserien wird die Häufigkeit und die klinische Bedeutung des Nachweises der Vena ophthalmica superior überprüft. Während ihre Darstellung bei “Prozessen fällen” selten ist, finden sich bei pathologischen Prozenssen (Hirntumoren, Blutungen, Gefäßprozessen, Sinusthrombosen etc.) unterschiedliche Häufigkeitsverhältnisse. Für die klinische Auswertung sind der Zeitpunkt ihrer Darstellung Kontrastmittels von Bedeutung. Die bisherigen Untersuchungsergebnisse werden mitgeteilt.
