Studies on the structure and ultrastructure of the intact and “methallibure”-treated meso-adenohypophysis of the viviparous teleost Cymatogaster aggregata Gibbons

Summary

The structure and ultrastructure of the meso-adenohypophysis of the viviparous teleost, Cymatogaster aggregata Gibbons are described. One acidophil, one chromophobe and two basophil cell types were identified. Following treatment of the fish with “methallibure”, the gonadotroph basophils were completely, and the somatotroph acidophils partially, depleted of electron-dense granules, whereas the thyrotroph basophils were slightly hypertrophied. The usefulness of “methallibure” as an agent for chemical hypophysectomy in studies of gametogenesis is discussed.
