Summary
By means of the “formaldehyde-induced fluorescence” on cryostat sections, the first adrenergic neurons of the rat heart can he demonstrated just before birth, in the guinea-pig heart already at the end of the second trimenon. Apart from this difference the development of adrenergic neurons of both species proceeds almost identically. — The adrenergic neurons in the hearts of adult rats and guinea-pigs show characteristic differences with respect to density, distribution in atria and ventricles, mode of innervation of the coronary arteries and large blood vessels and the fine architecture of nerve plexus. In the guinea pig heart the adrenergic neurons are more abundant than in the rats heart. The cardiac ganglia of both species were shown to be always cholinergic.
