Abstract

Air pollution surveys conducted in the Rouen district have shown the occurrence of short but acute episodes of high pollution due to unfavorable meteorological conditions. It has thus been decided to realize an automatic monitoring system, based on a network of 18 air analyzers completed with wind velocity and direction measurements; a set of temperature probes displayed at different heights on the local TV-tower gives information on the existence of low layers inversions.

A mathematical model taking into account the results of the monitoring system and a special meteorological forecast has been established. A prevision of the air pollution evolution during the next 24 h is worked out by a computer. According to the results of this prevision, alarm warnings are sent to the major polluters which are compelled to abate their emissions.
