Summary
Submicroscopic changes in the liver cells of adult female white laboratory rats following single or repeated administration of a choleresis stimulating agent are described.
The Submicroscopic alterations are most obvious in the cytoplasm. The nuclei show the usual ultrastructure; their size only demonstrates that they are in some way involved in the processes of hypersecretion. The most evident morphological changes brought about by hypersecretion are observed in the Golgi complex, the lysosomes, and in the mitochondria. Alterations appear also in the bile capillaries. Under the electron microscope there are no changes to be observed in the endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes and cell inclusions.
On the basis of our own observations and those of other authors, we are of the opinion that most active toward the secretion of bile are the Golgi complex, the lysosomes and mitochondria. It appears most probable that the extrusion of bile is realized through transmembranosis.
By critical examination of the results attention was drawn also to the functional factors which are connected with the changes in the ultrastructure of the liver cells during bile secretion.
