Summary
The morphological differentiation of liver cells in laboratory rat was followed electronmicroscopically in the early postnatal period between the first and the 40th day after the birth. In this period, there occur structural changes in liver cells resulting in the completion of their morphological differentiation. Submicroscopical changes in the nucleus are slight or electron microscopically difficult to identify. Only the occurrence of a great number of fat particles in the nucleus in 2–7 day-old rats was remarkable, coinciding with an excessive accumulation of fat in the cytoplasm. The main area of the cell where morphological differentiation takes place in the postnatal stage is however, the cytoplasm. Marked Submicroscopical changes occur both in its quantitative, and in its qualitative composition or appearance. These changes concern especially mitochondria, the granular endoplasmic reticulum, the number and localization of free ribosomes, Golgi's complex and microbodies. In the postnatal stage lysosomes appear in increasing number. The amount of glycogen and fat particles changes in a striking and characteristic way after the birth. In the course of 40 days, the fine structure of the liver cell stabilizes and remains practically the same as in the adult state. It is concluded that the completion of the morphological differentiation of liver cells in an early postnatal period takes place in connection with the coming and the full development of the special functions of the liver called forth by the transition to changed conditions.
