Summary
Porichthys notatus has a long infundibular stalk, measuring 3 to 5 mm. The third ventricle extends into the stalk as a long infundibular funnel.
In several hypophysectomised specimens the proximal cut end of the stalk enlarged to form a round or oblong body, having axonal endings with AF-positive material, glial elements, and blood sinuses. This suggests that in the absence of the pituitary the cut end of the stalk is reorganised into a neurohypophysis-like organ.
The regenerated stalk seems to have the essential components for neurohypophysial function; axonal endings for the storage of secretory products, and related blood vessels for the release of the stored principles.
