Summary
A description of the granulated cells in the human and mammalian endometrium and decidua is presented. Granular endometrial stroma cells (Hamperl and Hellweg 1954) were found only in the human, monkey and chinchilla. These cells are to be distinctly differentiated from the metachromatic decidual cells which also occur in the human (Ulesco-Stroganoff 1908, Wislocki and Dempsey 1948, von Numers 1953, McKay 1950, Rumbolz and Greene 1957, Feyrter and Wagner 1953) and in mammalian decidua (Selye and McKeown 1935, Asplund, Borell and Holmgren 1940, Velardo et al. 1953, Wislocki et al. 1957, Baker 1948, Bartelmez, Corner and Hartman 1951). Both cell types vary greatly in size, shape, in the histochemistry of their granules, in their location within the endometrium and their occurence in different mammalian species.
