Summary
Certain perfluorocarbon compounds have properties of remarkable biological inertness and chemical and physical non-reactivity. Several radiopaque perfluorocarbon compounds have been tested. One of these compounds, perfluorocytlbromide has been found to have low toxicity and provides excellent radiocontrast studies. This nonionic compound has other desirable properties such as low surface tension, low vicosity, rapid vaporization rate and high oxygen solubility. Stable emulsions and gels of this compound have been prepared in physiologic salt solution to provide contrast media of high viscosity. Although the relative radiopacity of this compound is less than that of organic iodide compounds, the radiograms obtained of the subarachnoid space in dogs are of acceptable diagnostic quality.
