On the nerve, endings in the muscle spindle of the rat. An electronmicroscopical and phasemicroscopical investigation

Summary

By means of phase and electron microscopy five types of intrafusal nerve endings, showing differences in localisation and ultrastructure, are described. They can be divided into two groups.

  1. 1.

Two kinds of endings show a neuromuscular contact approximately 150–350 Å wide and consisting of three layers but without a basement membrane between the membranes of the axon and the muscle fibre.

  2. 2.

Three kinds of endings are characterised by a basement membrane and a synaptic cleft of about 1000 Å.

In comparison with the so far known results of the structural and functional behaviour of the various types of nerve endings in a muscle spindle it can be concluded that the first group of endings belongs to the sensory, and the second group to the motor innervation.
