On the fine structure of the foetal-maternal junction in the bovine placentome

Summary

The foetal-maternal line of junction of the bovine placentome has been examined in the electron microscope. The fine morphology of the cryptal and trophoblastic cells has been explored. Microvilli are present at the contact surface between the cryptal and chorionic epithelial cells, and here an interdigitation is constituted. The site of the microvilli indicates that the cryptal cells are of maternal origin, and thus the thesis that the bovine placenta is of the epitheliochorial type has been further supported. The maternal and foetal epithelia rest on basement membranes, the latter of which is extremely well developed.
