Distribution of monoamine oxidase in the hippocampal region of the guinea pig

II. Subiculum and hippocampus

Summary

  1. 1.

The distribution of monoamine oxidase (MAO) has been studied in two areas of the hippocampal region of adult guinea pig: The subiculum and the hippocampus.

  2. 2.

Cryostat sections were stained essentially according to the tryptamine-tetrazolium method of Glenner et al. In many cases frozen sections of brains fixed by perfusion with cold formaldehyde were processed.

  3. 3.

Both of the examined regions contain large amounts of MAO, especially the subiculum. An extensive concordance of chemical entities with areas and layers defined on the basis of morphological criteria has been revealed, by a detailed analysis of the sharply differentiated MAO distribution.

  4. 4.

A histochemical feature of special interest, viz., an intensely stained, clearly delimited zone has been considered in more detail. The zone, preliminary designated the MAO-rich band of regio inferior, is located approximately to the subfield CA2 of Lorente de Nó.

  5. 5.

This correspondence is discussed in relation to the criteria for division of the hippocampus into subfields, with reference to available morphological, experimental, and histochemical data.
