Summary
Using morphometric methods, an interrelationship was established between the capillary system and certain nerve cell-neuroglia complexes in the central nervous system of Lumbricus terrestris.
The activation of neurosecretory A-neurons is associated with an increase of the capillary surface area and release of stored glycogen from periganglionic glial fibers; the relatively low functional activity of monoamine-containing B-neurons is related to their small surface area on the capillary plexus. A distinct vascular region, supplying exclusively ependymalike fibrous glia cells, is present at the oesophageal circumference of the supraoesophageal ganglion, adjacent to the ganglion cell layer.
Besides the quantitative differences in area-specific and function-dependent vascularization, several anatomical types of capillaries can be distinguished: capillary networks occur frequently in the ganglion cell layer, whereas capillary loops are limited to the glial fiber zone and certain glycogen-rich nerve cells. The L 1-capillary loops serving respiratory gas exchange can be distinguished from L 2- and L 3-capillary loops serving the uptake of neurosecretory products.
During the first two regeneration phases (Zimmermann, 1967) various neurosecretory cell types are activated in the undamaged brain half and the glycogen depots are fully depleted. This leads at the same time to an enlargement of the capillary surface area, whereas the reactive glia cell proliferation leads to poorer capillary supply. Some of these glia cells separate from the original cell group.
The results confirm the hypothesis that functional relationships exist between the vascular system and specific nerve cell-neuroglia complexes.
