Summary
The hypophysial portal vessels of Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii have a characteristic connective-tissue organization that displays the features of a functional system. Of significance is the structure of the reticular-fiher formation that binds the collar of pars-tuberalis cells to the bundle of vessels in the portal zone. The cells of the pars tuberalis are bound by fiber networks into larger complexes. Spiral fibers extend therefrom in a lattice arrangement which surrounds the portal vessels. This fiber system is continuous with the reticular framework of the median eminence (primary portal capillary net) and with that of the pars distalis (capsule, parenchyma, walls of the sinusoids). The fiber structures of the portal zone have, thereby, a polar attachment. Further fiber connections occur with the reticular formations in the adventitia of the basal arteries of the brain and in the basal meningeal plate. Through such a connective-tissue system it is conceivable that there may be a mechanogenic control of blood flow in which changes in the volumes of tuberalis cells can alter the blood volume of the portal vessels. Neither muscle sphincters nor epitheloid cell pads occur in the portal vessels of Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii. Further, the basal meningeal diaphragm, which contains numerous collagen fibers and only a few elastic fibers, seems not to have a role in control of blood flow. The regulatory influence of local endothelial swelling is discussed. There is only a small amount of pericapillary connective tissue ground substance. Light microscopy reveals no openings in the walls of the portal vessels nor in the basal membranes. The arteries and arterioles that supply the portal system are innervated with fine unmyelinated (autonomie) fibers. This indicates the occurrence of active regulation of the arterial input.
