Summary
A comparison of the localization of alkaline phosphatase in the peripheral cerebro-spinal nervous system of different species led to the following results:
-
1.
Similarities as well as pronounced differences were observed among the various regions and structures investigated. A constant finding was the high activity in arachnoid, satellite cells of sensory ganglia, and capillaries outside the nervous system. In all species alkaline phosphatase activity was absent from the dura mater, the epineurium, and the sheaths of spinal nerve roots.
-
2.
A positive reaction generally occured in endoneurial capillaries. Essential differences did not exist between epi- and endoneurial blood vessels. In most animals no enzyme activity could be traced in the perineurium; in one animal (mandrill) which displayed a positive reaction, enzyme activity was lower in the terminal regions of nerve fascicles.
The enzyme-histochemical findings in the perineurium and the blood vessels are discussed with respect to either the presence or absence of blood-nerve-barrier. Enzyme negative membranes predominated in areas with existing blood-nerve-barrier, whereas enzyme positive membranes prevailed in regions where this barrier is missing. Yet, our data do not supply unequivocal proof for the existence of an enzymatic barrier.
-
3.
In 4 species the enzyme pattern of newborn and adult animals was compared. Myelin formation was found to have an effect upon different enzyme localization in Schwann cells. The enzyme activity of the latter as compared to that of satellite cells varies to a higher degree in different species. The majority of Schwann cells contains no alkaline phosphatase.
-
4.
In many species the marked border between the arachnoid which shows high activity. and the perineurium from which the enzyme is absent, provides evidence that these membranes are endowed with different enzymes. As far as alkaline phosphatase is concerned these data do not suggest that the pia mater and the arachnoid constitute a perineurial epithelium which extends into the peripheral nervous system.
