Summary

During the metamorphosis of Alytes, the primary intestinal epithelium degenerates. Basal, undifferentiated cells aggregated in islets undergo frequent divisions, forming a second and transiently stratified epithelium. Its cells contain a granular endoplasmic reticulum which is arranged in flattened cavities, and numerous dictyosomes; little autolytic vacuoles and their altered derivations can also be observed. Near the lumen, the new cells occasionally contain great lytic inclusions the origin of which is discussed. At the end of metamorphosis, the final epithelium becomes unistratified and the lytic bodies disappear.
