Drainage of carotid-cavernous fistula through an unusually large intracranial venous network

Summary

Report of two cases of carotid-cavernous fistula characterized by a network of particularly large drainage veins. The authors believe that the development of such a drainage is due to a preexisting venous dysplasia which in the first case is responsible for a very large network. The authors also point out the very important arterial collateral circulation in the neck.

Les auteurs rapportent deux observations de fistules carotido-caverneuses opérées par ligature de la carotide se caractérisant par un système de veines de drainage intracrânien de très gros diamètre. Ils émettent l'hypothèse d'une dysplasie veineuse preéxistante qui intervient pour favoriser le développement d'un tel réseau qui prend un caractère monstrueux, surtout dans la première observation. Ils insistent également sur l'importante circulation collatérale développée dans la région cervicale.

Zusammenfassung

Es werden zwei Fälle von carotidocavernösen Fisteln beschrieben, welche nach Unterbindung der zervikalen Carotis eine ausgedehnte intracranielle varixähnliche venöse Drainage entwickelten. Es wird angenommen, daß so starke venöse Dysplasien als selbständige Fehlbildungen anzusehen sind. Auch wird darauf hingewiesen, daß in beiden Fällen eine sehr starke arterielle zervikale Kollateralzirkulation bestand.
