Summary
By means of the fluorescence method for the detection of catechol- and tryptamines green fluorescent nerve fibres are shown to be present in the wall of the intestinal tract of man. No fluorescent nerve cells could be detected. The fluorescent fibres enter the wall of the gut with the blood-vessels and are mainly distributed within the muscular layers and the ganglia of the plexus myentericus and plexus submucosus. In the stomach and the small intestine there are only few fibres in the muscular layers. The number of such fibres increases towards the distal portion of the large intestine and in the musculus sphincter ani internus there is a dense plexus of strong fluorescent fibres.
The catecholamine-fluorescence of the nerve fibres was distinguished from the autofluorescence of collagen and elastic tissue by means of microspectrographic measurements. The fluorescence within the varicosities of nerve fibres was shown to be mainly due to a primary catecholamine. In addition there is evidence that secondary catecholamines are also present.
