Analysis of the Ac transposable element dosage effect in maize

Summary

Evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that the odd dosage effect characteristic of the Ac transposable element results from competition between multiple Ac elements for a limited gene-activating factor. The behavior of a weakly competing derivative of Ac is described.
